RESISTANCE: Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Juried Exhibition at Slocumb Galleries
ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries in partnership with Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA) with support from Bravissima! Women Sponsoring the Arts, ETSU SAIC, Mary B. Martin School of the Arts, and Tennessee Arts Commission proudly present Resistance: MSA National Juried Exhibition featuring fourteen MSA contemporary sculptors with Artists Conversations during the closing reception on February 12, Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., Slocumb Galleries, with Guest of Honor, Dr. Robert Pack, Executive Vice Provost, ETSU.

Juror Michael Dickins stated, “RESISTANCE brings together artists exploring what it means to push back - physically, politically, and personally. Across the exhibition, resistance appears as a force in motion: energy applied against pressure, systems challenged through action, and bodies and materials responding to constraint.” The works are three dimensional works that “reflect resistance as a basic property of matter, visible in movement, tension, and kinetic exchange,” while others “address resistance as a form of survival and refusal through protest, care, endurance, or the fight against illness and injustice” in innovative display of technical skills and conceptual approach. Juror reiterates that “RESISTANCE considers opposition not only as conflict, but as a necessary and generative condition” that aim to provide platform for discourse, solidarity and critical thought.

The artists featured are Jason Brown, Jarod Charzewski, Jack Eubanks, Veronica Ibargüengoitia, David Marquez, Chelsea Moulder, Janet Orselli, Melissa Sclafani, Suzanna Scott, Sarah Spillers, Sepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti, Durant Thompson, Kristen Tordella-Williams and Luke Warren. Women Sponsoring the Arts, Jerry’s Artarama of Knoxville, and the Tennessee Arts Commission proudly present Visualize Your Future: Appalachian Youth Exhibition featuring K7-12 students from six regional schools with rescheduled reception on February 13, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Guests of Honor Johnson City Vice Mayor Jenny Brock, Bravissima’s Belinda Kiener and Scott Manning of Jerry’s Artarama.

Featuring 80+ middle and high schools students under the mentorship of their respective art teachers from Cherokee High School with Ms. Laura Heath; Daniel Boone High School with Ms. Alisa Brandenburg, Elizabethton High School under Ms. Rachel Turbyfill and Ms. Lisa Malone; Happy Vallery High School with Ms. Cydney Trent, Liberty Bell Middle School with Ms. Brooke Velsor; and the University School art educators Ms. Kristin Colson and Ms. Sharon Squibb. The exhibition is curated by ETSU Slocumb Galleries Curatorial Fellows Akintayo Akintobi and Amber Farley.

The Tipton-Ashe Gallery is located at 401 Ashe St. former Courthouse in Downtown Johnson City, Tennessee 37614.
