In this class, we will be making a copper rose with stem using basic sawing, hammer texturing, and soldering skills used in the jewelry making and metalsmithing industry.

Brandon Harrell holds a BFA from ETSU, and an MFA from Bowling Green State University both focused on jewelry and metalsmithing. She has instructed at Toledo Museum of Art, The Idea Factory in Columbus, Ohio, and other galleries around the country. "When I watched others demo this craft in school, I felt like this was not just a skill to be learned, but magic that I desired the ability to do myself." says Brandon.

Registration fee includes materials and shop fees. Lunch is on your own. Refund/Cancellation Policy: There will be a fee of $30.00 for any cancellations one week prior to the course start date. No exceptions.

This conference was founded by East Tennessee State University's Office of Professional Development in 2024, in collaboration with the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, Alzheimer's Tennessee, Northeast Tennessee-Southwest Virginia, and other regional agencies whose focus is on the aging experiences of East Tennesseans. In 2026, we are partnering with the Tennessee Department of Health's Office of Healthy Aging to continue increasing awareness for the need to foster a more equitable and supportive environment for our aging population. "Through recognizing partnerships and igniting conversations, this conference is beginning a pathway towards a more transparent, efficient, informed, and enriched journey for our seniors and their caregivers," says Interim Director Ruth Taylor Read. "It is important in every community that we become aware of allies, processes and resources that define today's aging experience." Beginning conversations will include essential topics in aging. We will discuss the latest Alzheimer's research and proven strategies to enrich the journey for our regional seniors. Other topics include: dementia, active aging, creative aging, and more. ETSU Employees may attend free with the submission of an employee audit form.

October is a month known for crisp morning air, brilliant blue skies, and colorful changing leaves. Since 1985, October has also been known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sew-Crazy of Northeast TN has supported breast cancer awareness and the regional patients battling it nearly every October since its founding 16 years ago with a special sewing project known as drain pouches or mastectomy aprons.

The tradition will continue this year with a public event on Saturday, September 19, 2026, 10 am to 2pm. It will be held in the Fellowship Hall of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 201 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City, TN. A free “sit-n-sew” day will attempt to make a goal of 100 completed aprons to be donated to Christine LaGuardia Phillips Cancer Center in Kingsport. Participants can come stay for the whole day or for just long enough to complete an apron.

The aprons are a very simple, easy to sew project, but participants must have basic sewing experience and must be over 18 years of age. Ages 15 to 18, accompanied by an adult, are welcome to take part. Sew Crazy members will be on hand to answer specific questions regarding the apron construction.

Attendees should bring their personal sewing machine and travelling sewing kit with fabric scissors and straight pins. Pre-cut kits of fabric and notions will be supplied by Sew Crazy. A few sewing machines will also be on hand if a sewer cannot bring one but still wants to sew for the cause. Light refreshments will be served.
