Campus Screening of Appalshop's The Ralph Stanley Story
Please join the Center for Appalachian Studies and Virginia Humanities at UVA-Wise for a special presentation of the Appalshop documentary film, The Ralph Stanley Story!
This documentary profiles one of southwest Virginia's most celebrated performers, Dr. Ralph Stanley, a Grammy award-winning musician and inductee into the Grand Ole Opry and International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Stanley began his career with brother Carter in the 1940s, performing as the Stanley Brothers and backed by the Clinch Mountain Boys. After Carter's untimely death in 1966, Ralph revived the group, proceeding to enjoy a long and distinguished career. In 2000, a new generation of fans discovered Stanley through his musical contributions to the Coen Brothers movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"
In honor of The Ralph Stanley Story's 25th anniversary, film director Herb E. Smith will join us for a special Q&A session following the screening.
