Iraqi Christian Refugee to Speak, Oct. 4, 2011 First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton will host the 2011 International Peacemaker Dr. Mazen Alsaqa on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:00 pm, at the ETSU “Pres House.” Mazen was born in Mosul, Iraq (old Nineveh), where he served in the Presbyterian Church in Mosul as youth leader, assistant lay pastor, and doctor in the church clinic. Following the kidnapping and murder of his father, Mazen fled to Jordan and in 2009 he was granted refugee status and currently resides in Michigan where he is studying to practice medicine in the USA. He is interested in the meaning of being Christian and the effects of persecution on faith and church. Dr. Alsaqa will speak at the Presbyterian Campus House (The “Pres House”) at ETSU, 1412 College Heights Road, Johnson City. This will be a rare opportunity to hear from a Christian from Iraq and to lean about the effect the Iraq War has had on the people there, including Christians. This will be the ONLY opportunity to hear him speak in the Johnson City area during his brief visit. It will also give us a chance to learn about his work in Iraq as a medical professional.
