“Dancing Princesses” comes to stage at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 26, as the City Youth Ballet’s senior dancers showcase several classical ballet selections. The performance, to be held at the City Youth Ballet studios, 3501 W. Market Street, is part of the CYB’s popular Lollipop Series, petit ballets performed for children. Admission is $5 at the door. In “Dancing Princesses,” the CYB dancers will perform selections from the classical ballet, “Sleeping Beauty,” including a pas de deux, a partner dance, with Aurora and her prince. Other selections include dancers as bluebirds, fairies, and even a duet called “Puss ‘n Boots.” Elaborate tutus from the days of princesses highlight the performance. The afternoon also includes a ballet lesson for those in the audience to join in plus refreshments. In fact, audience members are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite princess. “These Lollipop performances allow us to bring ballet to the public in a relaxed, child-friendly way while also allowing our dancers to show the fruits of their long hours of instruction here at the studio,” said Susan Pace-White, CYB’s artistic director. “These same variations to be shown in ‘Dancing Princesses’ have been performed worldwide with such ballets at the Royal Ballet in London and the New York City Ballet.” Also on Feb. 26, the CYB will host public auditions for dancers ages 9 and up. The audition begins at noon at the studios. Dancers must wear black leotards and pink tights; hair in a neat bun. Boys wear black tights and white t-shirt. The auditions are part of CYB’s protocol in maintaining its non-profit status. The studio is located just west of the Wal-Mart on West Market Street, next to Modern Supply. All proceeds from the afternoon will benefit the CYB as it brings classical ballet performances to audiences in Northeast Tennessee.
