St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnson City, TN
The Civic Chorale will present a mid-winter concert, entitled “TCC” at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11 in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnson City. There is no admission charge for the concert; donations are accepted at the door, with a $10 suggested donation. The initials of the three composers represented on the concert, Randall Thompson, Kenton Coe, and Aaron Copland are also the initials of the choir’s name. Internationally known Johnson City native, Kenton Coe, will be represented by three works, “A Quiet Alleluia” (1992) “The Architects of Heaven” (2009) and “Song of Creation” (1993). This latter work was initially commissioned by the Civic Chorale in honor of its founders, Robert and Jane LaPella. Mr. Coe has revisited the score, making some revisions, and the Chorale will be presenting this 2011 version of the work, and again dedicating the performance to the LaPella’s. Randall Thompson, sometimes called the “Dean of American Choral Composers” will be represented by five movements from his large work for double choir: “The Peaceable Kingdom” Drawing on texts from the prophet Isaiah, the work ranges in texture from simple 4-part choir to double 4-part choirs, to passages contrasting 4 part women’s voices with 4-part men’s voices. The Chorale will sing two motets composed by Aaron Copland while a young man studying with the renowned Nadia Boulanger in Paris: “Help Us, O Lord” and “Sing Ye Praises to Our King.” Following the two motets, the program will close with two of Copland’s charming settings of “Old American Songs.” The Civic Chorale was founded in 1973 by Robert LaPella with a small group of invited singers and Jane LaPella as the gifted accompanist. Over the years, the group has grown to become the region’s premiere independent auditioned volunteer chorus. In addition to singing the standard choral repertoire from Gregorian chant to modern compositions, the Chorale has presented numerous world and regional premieres and frequently collaborated with other music organizations in the region, including the Symphony of the Mountains, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir. Since 1998, the Chorale has been led by conductor David Hendricksen. Accompanists are Lisa Runner, piano, and David Runner, organ.
